Saturday, July 12, 2008 sugar grove fest, boone, n.c. played the sugar grove songwriters showcase today, 'black
gold' went over well, and i played a new song i've been polishing up, 'dream time', which was inspired by
a something ray davies said in a rolling stone mag interview, about how it's harder and harder to even find
the time to dream, let alone do something about your dreams. sugar grove usually features a performance by doc watson,
but he took ill, and was unable to play :( i overheard someone saying that a couple had come all the way from the netherlands
to see him do this show, too bad. i hope he feels better soon. fellow durhamites, the carolina chocolate drops played
the main stage both nights, along with a bunch of other great talent! pretty to drive throught the blue ridge in my
new (old) mercedes 300d, which will soon be converted to run on vegetable oil as my touring vehicle, i'm so excited! |

june
5, 2008 john shelp, old west durham neighborhood
association president, top-shelf friend and neighbor, and genius of durham lore, took an excellent photo of the new durham
farmer's market pavillon, with me in the foreground.(in my pics) it
was my first time playing the market, and i didn't know what to expect, but it was a great experience! i saw lots
of friends and durham neighbors out, a bunch of little kids danced along to the music, and even offered my bandmates and i
flowers, and alot of people who wouldn't normally come out to bars and coffeehouses becuase of kids and busy schedules,
came and listened at the market for awhile. thanks to everyone who stopped
by and hung out and listened, and tipped us and bought cd's too! i
was joined for awhile by michael bacon on fiddle, and he even threw in a couple of old-timey tunes, leading us in a rendition
of 'old joe clark', among others. joe cutrufo played his last
folk star gig for awhile, as he's moved back to boston to pursue his higher education :( i'll be back at the market on june 14 and 28th, please stop by and say hi, and listen for awhile.
we'll be playing more old-timey folk stuff, and some original tunes too. |
