song stories- a little bit about the tunes:
1 angel- a story about the dipping my toes into the water of new romance after the break up of a 10 year marriage. an "angel" met at a party.

2 woman at a gas station- story of a homeless woman who tried to sell wilted dumpster-salvaged flowers to gas station customers. the line about "she said she liked my hair" was from when i had a platinum blonde crew cut.

3. foolish dreams- tho it could be somewhat autobiographical, it was written about a roommate and friend in hollywood, who actually did record an album, get disillusioned, and move back to austin for some tech-type job. i played guitar in his band for a short time, before he kicked me out b/c i "sounded too much like buddy holly."

4. babe it ain't no lie- libba cotten tells it like it is. i love her fingerpicking style and starightforward lyric.

5. black gold- inspired by a piece of journalism i read in the l.a. weekly about power companies finding ways to push native americans off of thier lands in order to get at the natural resources there. (see dave cook's excellent "reservation nation" novel for a book length treatment of the same subject.)

6. hole in my heart- a country song about my divorce after 10 years of marriage and 2 kids. a lot of pain and heartache.

11. sunnyside- the carter family classic, with harmonies by jack and rah, and banjo by dom. i love how jack does the end "sunnyside of life" up high on this one.
