who are the folk stars anyway?
... who joined us for a practice
session after an afternoon of watching football with jack. jack and mark had been in bands together before in chapel
hill, from what i've gleaned they were playing a harder, punk-derived brand of rock. (i guess anything electrified
would be harder than mcfs).
our original line up was 4 people, and we played a bunch of local shows that way, me
on guitar and vocal, jack on bass and occasional acoustic guitar, mark p on drums (just a snare, hi-hat, and tamb), and rah
on djembe and mandolin. this was the same line-up that recorded the album, 'introducing mark cool and the folk stars',
and special guests dom flemons (of the carolina chocolate drops, ben palmer, gregory blaine (of rootzie), and james lee also
contributed their talents.
recently, mark p's other commitments, including his pursuit of his photography career,
have taken him away from the band, jack's impending birth of his first child prompted him to take a hiatus, and rah's
job as special events co-ordinator for durham has claimed most of her free time.
joe cutrufo came into the fold
to play drums, a boston expat, joe's been a great addition. michael bacon has recently played some shows , lending
his talents on the fiddle, and giving the mcfs sound a new dimension. we've done a couple of shows with just hand percussion
and fiddle (one with rah on mandolin too), and it's a fun, eclectic mix that seems to work well.
