ABOUT: 'Introducing Mark Cool and the Folk Stars' is a new release by North Carolina songwriter
Mark Cool and his band, the Folk Stars. The cd, released in August of 2007, was selected by the writers of Americana UK magazine
as one of the top 20 of 2007. This list also includes releases by Wilco, Okkervil River, Crowded House, Peter Case, and others.
The disc was recorded at Sound Scripture Studios
in Durham, NC. Special guests on the album include Dom Flemons, of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, who plays banjo and harmonica
on a number of tracks. In it's first month, the disc topped the country/folk/bluegrass chart at WXDU, Durham. Cool's vocals and lyrics have drawn comparisons to Townes Van Zandt
and early Springsteen. The cd features acoustic guitars, stand-up and electric bass, minimalist drumming on a stripped down
kit with only snare, hi-hat, and tambourine, as well as some mandolin, banjo, harmonica, and hand percussion added in, to
create a sound that's been described as "50's country that knows it's the 21st century." The music's
also been called 'nostalgic', 'earthy, gritty', and honest as Cool spins yarns from his experiences in Los
Angeles and North Carolina. Cool's recently played a solo mini-tour of the UK, with plans to return in late Summer. PRESS: "Folking cool ...honesty, integrity, simplicity, humour, understatement,
restraint, a ‘joire d’vivre’ that can only be found in folk who know exactly where the bottom and the top
can be found, catharsis, realisation… This is a rootsy, country, bluesy exposition of the highest order. Its partly
Lambchop that you can actually hear, partly 1950’s country music that realises that this is the twenty first century,
partly damn fine music that X-Factor fans should be required to listen to..." ---Paul
Villers, Americana UK magazine "...Mark
Cool and the Folk Stars is music that is well-grounded, even earthy and gritty in its texture. Yet, it moves forward in an
upbeat dynamic way that finds its mark straight to the heart. I trust his words and the authenticity of the music. ... I highly
recommend it to you." -Reid Baer, menstuff.org ""The more I listen to Marks music
the more it grows on me.It has an authentic beatnick 50's-mid 60's feel about it ,not disimilar to Woody Guthrie and
Bob Dylan that I find relaxing and pleasantly nostalgic." -dodgy dave, nessmp3.com, Scotland Members: -Mark Cool (guitars,
