hole in my heart             c mark cool 2006

my dog and i walk empty streets
early sunday morning
it's cold enough outside
to frost the grass
the only other souls around are the
church goers
in their sunday best,
cars washed and waxed
my head's still clearing' from last night's beers
i was out way past midnight
makin' the scene
in smoky bars
my ex-wife picked up the kids yesterday
we said our usual hello and goodbye
not much else
just load up the car
then the house is empty and they're gone
and i'm on the couch with the tv on
chorus
and i want to think of her and feel
somethin' other than bad
i wanna think of her and feel
and one day when i think of her
i'll be able to smile
and this hole in my heart will go away
i threw away my old weddin' band
i'd been holdin' onto it
stashed in the back
of the kitchen junk drawer
i put it in the bin
with eggshells and tuna cans
and coffee grounds
i won't be needin' that ring anymore
i did my best to love her for 11 years
worked hard and i paid the bills
washed my share of dishes
and did my best to listen
maybe we just weren't made for each other
but lord knows we got two beautiful kids
it's sad that it had
to come to this
friday night and i'm all alone
with a noisy tv and a quiet phone
chorus
and i want to think of her and feel
somethin' other than bad
i wanna think of her and feel
and one day when i think of her
i'll be able to smile
and this hole in my heart will go away
